CZEPA was founded in 1990. At the time, many people with spinal cord injuries did not receive adequate specialized medical, psychological, or social care. The great need for such care was the motivation for CZEPA. Prior to 1990, victims of spinal cord injuries were treated as typical patients in health facilities, with little attention paid to their specific needs. The lack of knowledge regarding current treatments for spinal cord injuries resulted in inadequate care and complications during hospitalization and rehabilitation. As a consequence, people suffered physical and mental harm.
Adequate professional assistance with the medical, psychological, social, and ethical needs of people with spinal cord injury is a human right. Since its foundation, CZEPA has taken actions to improve this specialized assisstance and advance the acceptance of this holistic conception nationwide.
