CZEPA’s accomplishments

In 1994 CZEPA established the Paraple Centre with the generous contribution of famous Czech performer Zdenek Sverak.  This facility is a place where anyone who is mobile with use of a wheelchair can turn to for  assistance. The Paraple Centre provides physical therapy, occupational services, as well as, psychological consultation and education.

Improvements in specialized health care

In the Czech republic many people with spinal cord injuries had not received adequate specialized medical, mental, or social care. The great need for such care was the motivation for CZEPA. Prior to 1990, victims of spinal cord injuries were treated as typical patients in health facilities, with little attention paid to their specific needs. The lack of knowledge regarding current treatments for spinal cord injuries resulted in inadequate care and complications during hospitalization and rehabilitation. As a consequence, people suffered physical and mental harm.

Adequate professional assistance with the medical, psychological, social, and ethical needs of people with spinal cord injury is a human right. Since its foundation, CZEPA has taken actions to improve this specialized assisstance and advance the acceptance of this holistic conception nationwide.

1994 – 1998

CZEPA, with support of the Czech Ministry of Health and a group of international medical specialists, organized seminars oriented on the treatment and rehabilitation of para/tetraplegics.

1996 – 2004

CZEPA promoted „National Spinal Cord Injury Scheme“ and advocated for the establishment of three new spinal units within the Czech Republic. These spinal units provide specialized care for patients who suffered a spinal cord injury. At the time, the spinal unit in Brno was the only one in the country.

2002 – 2003

The Czech Ministry of Health authorized the establishment of three new spinal units within the Czech Republic – in Ostrava, Liberec and Prague – Motol, thus fulfilling an important part of the CZEPA plan.

Spinal Units

Since 1996 CZEPA has promoted „National Spinal Cord Injury Scheme“ and advocated for the establishment of three new spinal units within the Czech Republic. These spinal units provide specialized care for patients with spinal cord injuries. Such highly specialized professional care is especially needed in the first few weeks after the spinal cord injury. In 2002, the Paraple Center held a number of conferences on the „National Spinal Cord Injury Scheme“ in coordination with national institutions and professional associations. Discussions among representatives from existing and designated spinal units took place during these conferences.  In 2002 three new spinal units (Ostrava, Liberec and Prague – Motol Faculty Hospital) were established by resolution of the Czech Ministry of Health.

Paraplegic Forum

In 2004 the first National Spinal Cord Injury Conference was held. This event brought together representatives from spinal units, rehabilitation centers, and the Paraple Center. Together they resolved to establish a Paraplegic Forum, a group of health care professionals organized by the Paraplegic Federation.

In 2007 the Paraplegic Forum separated from the Paraplegic Federation and continued in its activities under a new name – the Czech Association of Spinal Cord Lesions, newly organized by the Czech Medical Association of Jan Evangelista Purkyne.
